The congregation of Liberty Church is well-served by leaders who share responsibilities for governance in administrative, fiduciary, pastoral advisory and facilities management.

These leaders share oversight responsibilities in support of our goal to see all believers carry out the mission of living freely, faithfully and fully as followers of our risen Lord.

Their tasks in concert with the senior Pastor have a dual purpose: 1) actively serving the congregation (according to each one’s gifts and assignments within church life) and 2) encouraging and empowering other members of the Body of Christ.

With these goals in mind, Liberty’s leaders serve in one (or more) of these three roles:

Elders: primarily spiritual oversight, biblical counsel and congregational care

Deacons: primarily specific practical areas of responsibility that serve the ministries and necessities of congregational life including buildings, property, equipment and resources

Trustees: primarily financial, legal, business-related areas of collaborative oversight.

All three categories share a vision that is based in the servant model that Jesus explained so vividly in the Upper Room encounter with His disciples. Taking the common example of foot washing in the 13th chapter of the Gospel of John, the Lord reflected on the type of leadership that would be needed for His good news to be placed as the highest priority of the future church. In John 13:15, He said: “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.”

The practical application of that “foot-washing” attitude is described in many passages of the New Testament. Special emphasis, however, is placed on its necessity for those who would love, lead and inspire congregational experiences that stay focused on Christ as King among His redeemed people. Leadership in this light is taught in Matthew 20:28, Philippians 2:25-30, I Peter 5:1-7 and Hebrews 13:17. We see these principles as foundational for church leaders and members alike to be committed to what is best for the edifying of the Body of Christ.
