Greetings Liberty family & friends
One of the surprises that meets anyone who starts, for the first time in life, to actually read through the Bible, is how deeply God’s Word identifies human struggles. Stories from centuries ago clearly show human yearnings that God understands and blesses. Even something as common as the beauty of changing seasons finds expression in the voices of Bible characters.
How many people complain about (or long for a change in) the weather? It’s pretty cool (or hot, depending on your perspective!) that even the seasons matter to God.
With spring time just around the corner, the voice of the Shulammite woman in Song of Solomon is an example of that very fact. Here’s what she says:
“See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.
Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come.”
(Song of Songs 2:11 NIV)
Is anything more universal among all cultures on the earth than a yearning for spring? Is that also why God’s plan for the passion of Christ and his glorious resurrection was scheduled for spring time? He could have chosen any time of year for the crisis that Jesus of Nazareth had to face – but he placed it squarely (with Passover) in spring time.
Even within an ancient love story, God’s Word places an anticipation of beauty, song birds and blossoms bursting on the scene in the season He synchronized with Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection.
Although the “season of singing” clearly beckons the birds back into action, it has a greater fulfillment in the lives of the redeemed. Christ’s conquest for all humanity sends “the season of singing” directly into the heart of today’s church.
As heirs of the new life Jesus gives us through the power of His Spirit, singing springs up in thousands of ways for His followers. Our “winter” of discontent is past and the “spring” of God’s redemptive action in Christ has arrived. A love story far greater than the Song of Solomon is here.
Our “season of singing” isn’t based on a calendar or a weather report. It arises from knowing Jesus, the One whose life lifts us and empowers us through every season!
Sundays are a superb time to savor and celebrate the spring time of His love.

“For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His love for those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west,
so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him,
For He knows how we are formed;
He remembers that we are dust.”
(Psalm 103:11-14 NIV)
In his love,
Pastor Joe
